In this essay we collect and put together a number of ideas relevant to the understanding of the phenomenon of creativity, confining our considerations mostly to the domain of cognitive psychology while we will, on a few occasions, hint at neuropsychological underpinnings as well. In this, we will mostly focus on creativity in science, since creativity in other domains of human endeavor have common links with scientific creativity while differing in numerous other specific respects. Alexander Grothendieck, one of the great mathematicians of all times, was a mystery man who moved through life in a single-minded pursuit of purity of the soul, for which he abandoned mathematics and shut himself away from human society. His enormous mathematical contributions apart, he left behind an equally enormous volume of unpublished manuscript, exploring in his own way the foundations of human existence.
