Alexander Grothendieck, one of the great mathematicians of all times, was a mystery man who moved through life in a single-minded pursuit of purity of the soul, for which he abandoned mathematics and shut himself away from human society. His enormous mathematical contributions apart, he left behind an equally enormous volume of unpublished manuscript, exploring in his own way the foundations of human existence. Humanity will perhaps for ever be in puzzled wonder about who he was and what he stood for.
